The Public Library "Rubén Martínez Villena" Office of the Historian of Havana City has the pleasure of inviting you to its headquarters to participate in the First Technical-Scientific Event "The Libraries and the Book in the 21st Century", to be carried out on October 15 to 18, 2005.
The aim of this important meeting is to propitiate the exchange of knowledge, ideas and experiences with colleagues from other countries and about the different thematic that will be approached.

How to submit a proposal
Presenters should present their proposals in paper form or poster.
The receipt deadline for the proposals is April 30, 2005.
Proposal should include:
Proposal should incluye a short biographical statement and resume.
Papers should not exceed the 15 pages (images included). They should be submitted in electronic format (using Microsoft Word, Arial 10) or by e-mail.
Proposals and final papers must be written in Spanish.
Posters should have a maximum size of 1 m x 0.80 m, and the letters should not be smaller than 24 points.
The selected posters must be printed in some resistant and flexible material to allow to show them hung.
Presenters are responsable for the transfer of their posters inside and outside the country.
The authors of selected papers and posters will be notified before May 31, 2005 by e-mail.
The receipt deadline for the selected final papers or posters is April 30, 2005.
Papers and posters should be submitted in electronic format so that they are included in the memoirs of the Event.
Registration fees
Speakers and foreign participants: 150 dollars
Payments must be made by bank transfer or cash.
The transfers (USD) must be made before September 15, 2005 to the bank account number.

The Restoration of the Historical Center began on May 5 of 1981. The works has been organized and directed by the Historian's Office, with the care of Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler. This urban rehabilitation has been joined to the social and economic affairs, but has been done safeguarding the inheritance and the national identity.
The Provincial Library "Rubén Martínez Villena" is one of the restored centers, located in Bishop Street 59 in front of the Plaza de Armas. It is also surrounded by other historical buildings: the Museum of Natural Sciences, Santa Isabel Hotel , the Palacio del Segundo Cabo (today it welcomes to the Cuban Institute of the Book), the Palacio of the General Captains (place that occupies the Museum of the City), The Mine Restaurant, The Royal Force Castle and The Templete, these two last have been transformed into museums.

CUBA, largest island of the West Indies, south of Florida of the United States and east of the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico.The total area is 114,524 sq km (44,218 mi) including the area of the Isla de la Juventud (formerly called Isle of Pines) and of other islands of the republic.
The estimated population of Cuba is about 11.180.009, giving the country an average population density of 98 persons per sq km. The Cuban population is made up mainly of three groups. Approximately 66 percent of the population is white and mainly of Spanish descent; 22 percent is of mixed racial heritage, and 12 percent is black.
Spanish is the official language of Cuba.
The monetary unit of Cuba is the peso.
The climate of Cuba is semitropical, the mean annual temperature being 25° C (77° F). Extremes of heat and relative humidity, which average 27.2° C (81° F) and 80 percent, respectively.
In the City of Havana you will find its Historical Center: the Old Havana that evokes last centuries.It occupies an area of 2.1 km2, and contains 900 constructions from the XVI to the XIX centuries. You will see the architecture and the inherited urbanism of four centuries of Spanish colonization, besides other 200 constructions built in the first quarter of the XX century. Five squares and several plazuelas of special urban layout and the system of fortifications, sentries of the bay, are symbols for the "Humanity's Heritance" nomination that was granted in 1982, for the United Nations for the Education, the Science and the Culture Organization (UNESCO).
